The Power of Love

Here are five biblical truths—just a few among many—that help us experience and express the power of love:

The Power of Love

So many song titles come to mind when we think about love:

  • The Power of Love ~ Huey Lewis

  • Love Is a Battlefield ~ Pat Benatar

  • Love Hurts ~ Nazareth

  • I Don't Want to Miss a Thing ~ Aerosmith

  • I Want to Know What Love Is ~ Foreigner

Each one carries a story, an ache, a longing. I could share a memory for each— I’ll resist for now and ask, Do you have a favorite love song?

Love means different things to different people, shaped by culture, relationships, and lived experience. But when I speak of the power of love, I’m inviting us to shift our focus— to consider the love of God.

When we contend for recovery, when we walk alongside those caught in active addiction, this is where love truly matters. The weight of despair, the exhaustion of broken promises to self and others, the deep sense of incomprehensible demoralization—it is real, and it is painful. Recovery is a battle. And love is not a soft sentiment here; it is a powerful force.

Here are five biblical truths—just a few among many—that help us experience and express the power of love:

Love is a gift from God.
John 3:16 reminds us that God loves all people. That love was revealed through Jesus—to show us who God is, to offer forgiveness, and to invite us into new life. This love is offered freely. The question is simple and profound: Have we received this love?

Love drives out fear.
1 John 4:18 tells us that perfect love casts out fear. Addiction is often wrapped in fear—fear that shows up as anger, control, isolation, or shame. When we choose love, we stand in the victory love has already won over fear.

We love because God loved us first.
1 John 4:10 / 19 reminds us that we can’t give what we haven’t received. Do we truly know that we are loved by God—right now, in our weakness, not after we “get it together”? God’s love is greater than our past, our feelings, and whatever we are facing today.

Love covers a multitude of sins.
1 Peter 4:8 encourages us to love deeply. This God given love— charity, a free gift— has the power to cover, to heal, and to restore what is broken.

Love is known in the context of relationship. John 13:34-35
Jesus said, “Love one another… by this everyone will know you belong to Me.” God’s people are called to be marked by compassion, humility, and courage— empowered by His Spirit to love with Divine purpose.

Those we know and care about—the addicted, the conflicted, the hurting—are longing for what only God can give. If God has given to you, then give to others!

“All creation waits eagerly for that future day when God will reveal who His children really are.” — The Apostle Paul ~ Romans 8:19

This is the love of God~ the power of love.

Q) When you show up, what do you bring?

As, mentor and friend, John M. Perkins said, “Love is the final fight.”

Friends, you are deeply loved with love that has the power to change everything.

Lifeguards watch the water

When we say, "Friendship is a gift from God" we recognize that within the context of friendship God is present!

We get to serve and receive, to laugh and cry, to rejoice and lament with our friends.

This month we say THANK YOU God for all who pray and support the work being done in and through Harbor Rock Recovery!

A life line that reminds me of the Life Guards ready to help others have the best experience ever while at the beach.
