SOBER CURIOUS?
SOBER CURIOUS?
TRY A SOBER SUMMER
Listen friends, we at Harbor Rock Recovery are not prohibitionists. If you can enjoy an adult beverage without consequences, that's awesome, some of us can't. Many of us know first hand, it’s the 1st drink that gets us drunk, or as the saying goes; “We take a drink, the drink takes a drink, then the drink takes us.”
A growing number of people are becoming "sober curious"—wondering what life might be like without social drinking, that glass of wine with dinner, or a few beers with friends. Many are committing to 90 days alcohol and drug free and discovering surprising benefits.
People report feeling better physically while learning to navigate life emotionally and mentally without buffering stress, loneliness, anxiety, or discomfort with a drink. Some discover a new sense of freedom and purpose. Others realize how much they relied on alcohol or other substances to soften life's edges.
What if you tried a Sober Summer? Just 90 days without alcohol or drugs. What if you explored new activities, healthier habits, and took an honest look at your thoughts, feelings, and sense of purpose?
Alternate Beverages
Water, iced tea, coffee, tea, soft drinks—even an Arnold Palmer. For this experiment, consider avoiding mocktails, non-alcoholic substitutes, and energy drinks. Give yourself the opportunity to experience true sobriety—one day at a time.
New Activities
Instead of gathering around drinking-centered events, try something different. Meet someone new. Play games. Create art. Walk, hike, read, learn a new skill, or enjoy live music.
One local favorite is the summer Concerts in the Park at Polliwog Park in Manhattan Beach. You'll notice that drinking is a normal part of the experience for many. Try attending sober and see what you discover.
Evaluate the Experience
Keep a simple journal. What did you do instead of drinking? How did you feel? Be honest. Excited? Nervous? Lonely? Hopeful? Angry? Peaceful?
Pay attention to your inner dialogue, fears, desires, relationships, and spiritual life. You may discover new freedoms, new interests, and a deeper awareness of self—and certainly God.
Our desire at Harbor Rock Recovery is to help people understand what God has done, what He is doing, and what He longs to do in and through His people. We believe we’re created for freedom, purpose and connection to our creator and one another.
We live in a world full of distractions and opportunities to self-medicate.
Consider this test for some help assessing your situation.
Together we can be an extension of God's love, revealing His power, presence, and purpose. Galatians 5:1 "It's for freedom Christ came, to set us free"
